Many people have skin lesions that are classified as benign (non-cancerous) that frequently cause itching, discomfort and even bleeding at times and owing to pressured services, the NHS is currently unable to treat these.
At the Wellness clinic Wokingham, Minor Surgery Services are provided by Dr Marie-Clair Murphy, an experienced GP who works in both the NHS and the private sector.
Dr Murphy will assess your skin lesion and advise you of the most effective way to remove it.
Initial Consultation
Your initial consultation will last 15 minutes in which a detailed history will be taken and measurements and photos taken. A complete explanation will be given about the procedure, the risks and benefits and a consent form completed.
We aim to remove non-cancerous lesions and if a lesion has suspicious features, an appropriate specialist referral will be made in your initial consultation.
This consultation costs £70 and there is no obligation to proceed.
Curette and Cautery
Curette and Cautery is frequently used to treat skin tags and Seborrheic warts. Local anaesthetic is injected into the skin lesion. this stings a little but within seconds your skin is numb, and your surgery is painless.
The lesion is removed with a specialist machine called a Hyfrecator, this is used to help ensure the whole lesion is removed and does not recur. This also minimises bleeding risk of surgery, leaving you with a graze like area, that will subsequently scab and heal. No need for suture removals.
Excision
Larger skin lesions like sebaceous cysts and pigmented moles are generally removed by a process called excision.
The relevant area is cleaned and numbed using local anaesthesia. The skin lesion will then be removed and the wound closed using sutures that remain in place for 7-10 days.
A wound review and suture removal is arranged, this follow up appointment is included in your package.
Histology
Best practice guidelines require that all skin lesions that are excised should be sent for detailed analysis in the laboratory called histology. In Dr Murphy’s experience 99% of lesions are confirmed as benign but despite looking benign some skin lesions can require further surgical excision due to unexpected cancerous features and this ensures nothing is missed.
Histology fees are an additional cost.
